Tech Tuesday: My Favorite Spelling App

Between my 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grader we tackle about 60 spelling words a week.  Add on the 30+ vocabulary words and you can see why I started searching for spelling apps almost immediately after getting my iPad.  After trying a few, I finally found one that worked.  It’s called Spellboard. Here are a few of the things I like about it… It can work with multiple users so I can manage the spelling lists for each of my kids Using the built-in iPad microphone I can record the pronunciation of the spelling words and simple phrases,...

Tech Tuesday – Three Cheers for Stick Dog

The only thing better than enjoying a great book with your kids is enjoying a great FREE book with your kids. When I found this book in the iPad library I knew my kids would be fans…after all, the illustrations look just like their drawings. I read this little book aloud to my kids over a few nights and they thought it was hysterical.  Seriously, laugh-out-loud funny.  The story revolves around the misadventures of 4 stray dogs in search of a hot meal – in this case big, juicy hamburgers. The book is written in a casual,...

Tech Tuesday – A Blu-ray Player that’s Worth Every Penny

I’m a big fan of technology.   Most women have a weakness for shoes, craft supplies, or jewelry…mine is gadgetry. You guys know I love finding tricks that my life easier.  Well, a great gadget offers me the same benefits.  It saves me time and helps me keep my crazy, unpredictable life on track.  The best gadgets do all those things and go one step further – they help me and my family have more fun.  After all, what good is a neat and organized life if it doesn’t have room for relaxation and recreation? Since I...

Friday’s Find – Awesome iPhone App for Kids

Happy Friday, everyone.  I’ve got a great new find for you iPhone lovers out there.  I came across this app the other day and my kids can’t stop playing with it.  It’s called Balloonimals and essentially it’s like having a clown tucked in your pocket. The game is incredibly simple.  When it opens there are a bunch of deflated balloons to choose from. Once you choose your favorite, you blow into the microphone (or tap it on the iPod touch) to inflate the balloon.  Give it a few good shakes and your balloon...

Friday’s Find – Teach Your Kids US Geography with this Handy iPhone App

Don’t you just love it when you find ways to help your kids teach themselves?  My fifth grader is studying US geography and they’re focusing on the New England area.  Even I have a hard time telling the tiny New England states apart so I thought I’d look for a good app that could give her a hand.  Little did I know that the app I found would have all three of my school-age kids hooked for hours. It’s called Stack the States and it’s the new favorite at our house.  Here’s the abbreviated description from...

An Easy and Entertaining Way to Brush Up on Your History

One of the things I think is particularly hard about motherhood is the fact that your brain gets neglected a bit.  Now don’t take that the wrong way.  I know motherhood is noble and wonderful and all that good stuff – but let’s face it – when the majority of your day is spent taking one step forward and three steps back, there isn’t much room for enriching neurological stimulation.  Generally reading a good book can help kick you out of these ruts but finding time to sit in a quiet corner with the latest...

Understanding the Banking Crisis: MeckMom Style

I like to consider myself a fairly intelligent person.  I’m no financial guru mind you, but I like to think I have at least a reasonable understanding of our financial system.  Well, I did think that…right up until this financial crisis hit our country.  Now I hear phrases like ‘toxic assets’ and ‘mutual investment liabilities’ tossed around in the news and it all seems a bit fuzzy. I must not be the only one because a few months ago one of my favorite podcasts, This American Life, dedicated an entire...

I Hulu. Do You?

Let’s face it, much of what we Moms do on a day-to-day basis doesn’t require much brain power.  We clean stuff, fold stuff, fix stuff, cook stuff – all of which requires very little thought and can be (dare I say it?) kind of dull.  Now don’t get me wrong, there are loads of women out there who relish in these daily domestic activities and I think that’s fantastic.  I’m just not one of them.  If I have to fold 5 loads of laundry, I’d like to be entertained while doing it. If I have to sort through...

My Favorite Organization Tool – The Apple iPhone

I have to admit, I’ve been resisting this post for quite some time.  I’m not sure why.  Maybe it’s because the vast majority of my organizing solutions cost less than $10 and can be picked up at your local super store.  Promoting something that costs a few hundred seemed like a big departure from my typical MeckMom style.  Well, today I’m making an exception to my “cheap and easy” solution pattern.  I’ve had an iPhone for over a year now and I can honestly say that I think it’s one...
