Friday’s Find – Two Sites that Save Me Money

I’m not a big coupon user.  I probably should be but it all seems so tedious.  Searching, cropping, sorting, organizing…all to save $.35 on a jug of orange juice?  I’m far too lazy for that.  Maybe that’s why I like these two deal sites so much.  They offer me all the savings without all the hassle. The first site is CityDeals CityDeals is pretty self-explanatory,  they send me daily deals via email and I purchase anything that grabs my eye.  I can either print the deals immediately or have them mailed to me....

Kick Off the Year in Style with a School Year’s Eve Party

There’s no avoiding it.  The long, lazy days of summer are winding down.   Soon my kids will be heading back to school and saying goodbye to late bedtimes and hanging out in their pj’s til noon.  It’s a rough transition for the whole family so we like to kick things off with one last night of family fun before the school year begins.  I call it our School Year’s Eve party. Now before you give me too much credit you should know that I read about this idea on Cookie Magazine’s website a year or two ago.  They...

Help Kids Conquer Fears with a Fear Factor Challenge

Are your kids scared to do this? How about riding down a huge water slide in this? Does the idea of popping one of these into their mouth make their nose wrinkle in disgust? If so, I can relate.  My kids were scared of all of those things and more.  So last summer we began a new tradition – our annual Fear Factor Challenge.  It was inspired by a clever ‘try new foods’ program at my kids’ school.  Each month they provided a new food for the kids to sample at lunch.  Anyone brave enough to try it signed their...

Add Some Flair to Your April Fools’ with This Free Printable

When it comes to April Fools’ Day, we like to keep it pretty simple.  This year, my husband and I snuck into our kids’ bedrooms at night and signed their faces with washable markers (I made sure to to it in pink and add hearts – just to bug my boys).  Our kids quickly retaliated by leaving dry erase messages on our mirrors and by flipping our laptops over on our desks (mine had been invaded by Star Wars figures). I also borrowed an idea from Family Fun and whipped up a batch of orange “Gelled Juice” last night....

Banish Monsters Forever with a Monster Catcher Journal

Banish Monsters Forever with a Monster Catcher Journal

About two years ago, my son started having a little trouble with nightmares.  Like most five-year-olds, he was convinced there were monsters lurking in every shadow. For the first few nights, I went through the traditional parental reassurance methods; checking under the beds and opening closet doors, but it seemed a bit futile. After all, I wanted my son to be able to banish these imaginary monsters on his own – to feel like he was in control – not be dependent on me to fight the bad guys. That’s when I came across a great...

Great Card Games for Kids

Great Card Games for Kids

There’s nothing quite like sitting down at the kitchen table to play a great card game as a family.  If your family loves the classics like UNO, Old Maid and Go Fish, you might want to give a few of these newer games a try.  Generally you can find them at Target and Wal Mart for between $5 and $10 or you can click the game names below for direct links to Amazon. Wig Out For some reason, my kids – especially my girls - always beg for this game.  They think the hairstyles are hilarious and they love finding matches of their...

Two Fun Family Games

Hey there, everyone.  Remember me?  Sorry it’s been such a long break between posts.  The last few weeks have been a little crazy here.  In addition to being a bit sleep deprived (thanks to my chubby little 3-month old), I’ve also moved to a new house and embarked on a cross-country road trip with my family since my last post.  It’s been a whirlwind; but thankfully life is finally settling back down and I should be back on track with my posts.  Thanks for sticking with me. I thought I’d kick things off with...

Share the Love this Valentine’s – Host a Lotsa-Love Fest

You guys have probably figured out by now that I love the holidays…even the little ones.  They give me a chance to break up the everyday routine and inject a little fun into our family life.  This Valentine’s Day I decided to try a new family tradition…we’re calling it our Lotsa-Love Fest. I found the orginal idea on Family Fun’s website in their Valentine’s Traditions section.  In the post, Teresa J talks about setting up a “Secret Post Office” in their house so her family can send each...

Fun Kid Birthday Traditions

Fun Kid Birthday Traditions

Today was my son’s 6th birthday so I thought I’d post two of my favorite family birthday traditions.  They’re not fancy or expensive, but they’re a great way to add a little sparkle to your child’s big day. Breakfast Doughnut Tower This simple little idea stemmed from my Mom’s breakfast-in-bed birthday tradition.  When I was growing up, my birthdays always began with a hot plate of french toast in bed and a birthday serenade from my family.  In order to create that same warm and cozy feel for my kids...

Easy 5-Minute Play Fort

Nothing can push your mothering creativity like the long days of summer. When I hear my son start quoting air freshener commercials I know it’s time to shut off the TV and force a little good-ol-fashioned fort making. I wasn’t up for destroying the living room, so we used a corner of a bedroom instead. First, we rearranged the furniture to create a nook. We used bookcases, but kitchen chairs or dressers would work too. Next, I grabbed a spare twin sheet from under my son’s mattress (thanks for the comment on that, by the...
