We have a special plate that they get to use on their birthday. I found it at Walmart and it has a poem about birthdays on it. They also get a fancy goblet. They get to pick what they would like to have for dinner also. That was something my mother did. My dad used to take us out to lunch for our birthdays, just him and the birthday kid. He would take you to any restaurant you wanted to go to. We usually went on the Saturday nearest to our birthday. I really liked that one-on-one time. Maybe I need to have my husband start that!

I love the scavenger hunt idea! Lorelei will be one in April, so I don't think we are up for donuts just yet... but your idea had me laughing...

Maybe as they get older, you could start adding "embellishments"? Like, maybe go to 10 donuts and then when they turn 11, add a donut hole...12,, you could add another donut hole (with a toothpick...on the side or wherever)... Then you will have a goofy looking "cake" every year! lol...without 20 full sized donuts that you feel like you have to eat...lol

My oldest turned 8 this year. I had to use wooden bamboo skewers to keep the tower from toppling. I'm guessing that as the kids get into their teen years that I'll make a base pile of 8 or 10 doughnuts and then stack mini doughnuts on top to make up the difference. Maybe I'll make several piles of large ones and have them meet up at the top. We'll see...let me know what you come up with, Lisa. Good luck.

Maybe when the kids get older, maybe you could use donut holes?? I love this idea - and my kids b-day just passed last Sat....darn it! But will use it on their special day - I have twins and feel they get a little ripped off having to share a b-day, I decided to let them have a special day. Twin A (my son) has his day on the day I found out I pregnant. Twin B (my daughter) gets her day one month later when I found out I was having twins. So the donut tradition will be added to the list. Thanks for sharing!!

Your ideas make me want little kids around. How many years/doughnuts will you tower? Emily turns 15 in Feb. Is 15 doughnuts a bit much? And when there are only 4 family members who have to eat them all---you get the picture. I guess we could share with our friends...so just curious how tall you'll go?

You do such fun things. I am excited to do the doughnut tower for my son's b-day next week. I think I'll also do the target shooting thing. He is totally into guns right now.

thanks for sharing.
