Liven up St. Patrick’s day with this fun tradition
Mon, Mar 6, 2006
St. Patrick’s day was always a little dull at our house. We usually do the green pancakes and such, but I wanted something a little more fun for my kids to look forward to in March.
One year my oldest daughter fell asleep on one of those green beaded necklaces. When she woke up on St. Patrick’s Day, she had a strange green marking on her belly. She didn’t realize what had happened, so I told her that a lucky leprechaun must have snuck into her room late at night and left her his good luck mark. I told her the mark was very special because it promised an entire year of good luck. She was thrilled. Whenever she was nervous or scared during the following year I reminded her of the mark and she’d get a sudden burst of courage.
We had so much fun with it, that I’ve made it a St. Patrick’s Day tradition. Each year, I sneak into their rooms at night and draw a tiny green clover somewhere on their bodies. When they wake up on St. Patrick’s Day, they search for their mark and then rush in to tell me all about the great luck they’ll have that year. It’s an quick and easy way to brighten up an otherwise uneventful holiday. Just thought I’d pass it on.

Our leprchauns are tricky at our house they hide their pot of treasure and leave clues to find it. One year St. P’s day was on a school day and the clues walked them through their morning routine as they went. On the front of the clue was a job they needed to complete and the back was the clue to lead them to the next thing. They had to complete the job before they moved on. There was a prize at the end in a cauldron that I bought at halloween (good pot for treasure or gold coins) We gave them chocolate coins and a fabric shamrock to wear for some extra green. Here are the clues I wrote:
Follow our footsteps to find the first clue, Mom and Dad are there to help you. Solve the riddles one by one, you may open the next when each job is done!
We cover your legs, arms and feet, put us on and you will look neat! GET DRESSED
Rest your head where shamrocks lay, with luck good dreams will come your way. MAKE YOUR BED
Tummies need good things to eat, come downstairs and find your seat. EAT BREAKFAST
Use me on your head ‘cause you look scary, I will help you tame your hairy. COMB YOUR HAIR
Your bad breath makes my nose feel like slush, please use me to brush and brush. BRUSH YOUR TEETH
Look to find where stories are told, there you will find your lucky pot of gold! (hide treasure in a bookcase)
Our lucky gold you found upon the ground, put a piece in your pocket and pin on a clover and wherever you go, you will have luck all over.
